Silicon’s addition increases the steel’s electrical resistance, suppressing eddy currents—circulating currents that waste energy. Lower core loss not only boosts efficiency but also extends the lifespan of electrical equipment, a critical factor for energy-intensive industries and green energy systems.
In practical use, silicon steel sheets are often thin (0.15mm to 0.5mm) and coated with an insulating layer to further reduce eddy currents. They are stamped or cut into precise shapes—like the laminations in transformer cores or motor stators/rotors—to fit specific device designs. From power grids that rely on transformers to convert voltage, to electric vehicles (EVs) with high-efficiency motors, to everyday appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners, silicon steel sheets are ubiquitous yet underappreciated.
